Macbeth part 3

All year I have been messing with the 7th grade; I mention The Lion King as many times as I possibly can without being too ridiculous and see if they catch on. Once, I managed to slip the movie into my curriculum FOUR TIMES in one week. I think it's safe to say that is some kind of teacher record, and I should win an award. For example, if we're talking about narrative essays and we're talking about suspense, I say, "Like in The Lion King when Simba goes back to Pride Rock and you don't know what's going to happen and Timon and Pumba are in the hula skirts and you see the lions starving..." ANY time I reference capitalization, character development, death, deserts, long lost friends, animals, etc I ALWAYS mention The Lion King. After mentioning the movie for so long, I finally found out that some of the 7th graders had a tally going, tracking how many times I referenced the movie.
Then today the 7th grade entered my room. I told them it was my favorite day of the year, and I had the best lesson planned. Then I turned on the TV and showed them that we were going to watch The Lion King. Not only that, but I told them that it is based off of Macbeth, which we just finished, and that'd we compare characters from the movie to characters in the play. Finally, I told the whole class that if they talked, were distracting, or bothered me in any way I would send them out of the room because no way was I going to let some hooligan ruin this movie for me.
Then, as their jaws hit the floor, I sat back and got paid.

Running Update

Dear loyal readers,
Do you remember when I wrote the line "I might buy some new sneakers (still using the ol' cross country shoes)" ?? Well it turns out that when you run fairly long distances in 10 year old shoes it's not a great combo. Scratch that. It's a perfect combo...for getting tendinitis. That's right, I've got tendinitis of the ankle, and it is painful and annoying. The only good news is that my injury was a motivator for me to finally buy some new sneakers. I got a pair of new running shoes AND a pair of cross trainers that will be perfect for classes like Turbo Kick and Body Pump. I've paused my workouts for the last week, but in two days I'll start back up again. I understand there is a pool going and people have bet on which day I'll officially quit running. If February 12th was your day, I'm sorry to say, you are not the winner as I am still going strong. (Maybe we could plan something out for later this month and split the winnings...?)

Pliny the Younger!!

It was that time of year again--when Russian River Brewery makes their famous Pliny the Younger beer. Lisa and I drove up to Santa Rosa Saturday morning and arrived at the brewery at 10:15am. There was already a monstrous line of people waiting for a sample of the special beer. Half an hour later, Alejandro and his friends showed up and waited with us. Finally, at 11am the brewery opened! We quickly realized that even though the brewery opened and some people must have entered, we had not moved forward in line at all. We continued to wait, anticipating about an hour wait. FOUR AND A HALF HOURS LATER, we were finally in! We immediately ordered a round of the Younger, which was unbelievably delicious.

Then we ordered a bunch of other beers, including a delicious hef/belgian white andddd...drum roll please.... a beer that is placed inside old Pinot Noir barrels so that the beer flavor mixes with Pinot flavor to create a drink the gods would have fought over. Finally, Alejandro ordered a flight of beer and there were NINETEEN SAMPLES OF BEER IN THE FLIGHT. Did you hear me when I said NINETEEN???

San Jose

Spur of the moment, Dylan and I drove to San Jose because I wanted to get out of the city and Dylan wanted to go to a skate park down there. When we got to the skate park, I realized it was on the same street that Alejandro lives on. So we called him up and went to a nearby Italian deli. Yum.
